Title
After the Oakland Hills Firestorm
Artist
Asha Carolyn Young
Medium
Pastel - Pastel And Charcoal On Paper
Description
Our small rental home survived the firestorm, but we were devastated along with our neighbors, who lost everything. This was the 1991 Oakland Hills Firestorm in California, one of the largest urban fires in the U.S. at that time. After this fire, in which people lost lives, I also lost many paintings and my painting gear in my studio, though our little house survived. After the fire, I gained my name, "Asha" while meditating. Interestingly, "Asha" contains the word "ash," and it means "hope" in Hindi. This pastel and charcoal drawing shows the view from our south window.

Steve Breslow
absolutely amazing and powerful picture, so touching and emotional and also beautifully drawn, what art is meant to be
Asha Carolyn Young replied:
Steve, thank you so very much for your comment! I am glad this image touches you. It was a painful experience, and later I would learn others, too, go through this. They say fire is "The Great Purifier." It brings insights, to be sure!
